Describing photos
1) The photo is in the
countryside, probably in Norway judging by the appearance of the house, during
a rain shower. The center of attention is a bright red house, seen in the
foreground on the left. In the midground on the right is a large pair of
scissors, which cut through the house and the ground. The person in the house
is confused, the ground seems to billow or bow like cloth, but under the top
layer it is solid. Aside from that, the only effect of the scissors is a clean
cut, nothing seems too damaged or all that disturbed by the scissors. The house
is a dim and dull red, when the rest of the image is dull dark greens, greys,
and browns, making the white and red colors catch your eye. The countryside
would normally seem friendly and inviting and friendly, but the grim appearance
and the rain make it seem gloomy. It kinda seems to say that bad weather can
cut through and destroy even the nicest places and make them sad and broken. It
uses the dull empty grays to impose the dreariness of what's happening, and
employs the direct cut through the landscape to really emphasize that the
scissors will go directly through what's in their path .
2) This photo is also
set in the countryside and shows a woman climbing up a ladder to hang laundry
on powerlines, she is in the right foreground, in the background you see the
top of a house over a small hill and some bushes. On the left the powerlines
spread to the background and over the horizon line, it is simple unoccupied
countryside, only the powerlines seem out of place. The woman seems unphased by
the metal ladder on the powerlines, nothing seems unusual to her, all so
ordinary, but it's not. The colors are vivid, but not excessively so, once
again to make things seem ordinary. I think the message is that technology is
invading nature and taking over a old
way of life and people are adopting it but still keeping their old ways at the
same time, like its slowly seeping in.
3) In the foreground,
slightly to the left, there is a girl, just chilling in some boots, and behind
her is a sunset, to the right there are footprints. She is walking over a field
away from a farm in the far right background. She looks like a jockey, holding
the laces like reigns, and she looks happy. The viewer's attention is focused
on the boots and the woman riding in them. The photo is set during a sunrise,
or sunset. The other shoe is in the very center, with the sun directly behind
it. The woman is alone, in only one boot, walking away from what is presumably
her home, and the sun. Perhaps she is happy because she is getting her first
taste of freedom as an adult, in her adult shoes, but really she is still young
and only able to fill half of the role as an adult. The sunrise might actually
be a sunset, supposed to be disguised.
4) In the upper 3rd
there is a man and a bike, in the middle the trail he is riding sharply drops
and continues in the lower section. The viewers focus is on the drop, so is the
man's. Just like the man we are confused, how did this happen?
It uses symbolism to
represent the feeling of "so close yet so far", the man can see the
trail continuing but there is a impassible obstacle in the way.
5) In the center and
right 3rds there is a man painting, and in the left you see a bit of what he is
painting. The photographer uses a sort of optical illusion. The man, where he
covers the canvas, becomes part of the painting, missing his right arm since he
couldn’t paint it on, and he has yet to paint his hair. The viewer's attention
is on the man. The photographer uses blues and grays for the majority of the
photo. He likely wants to show how much an artist puts themselves into their
work.
